We were a little disappointed when we found out there were no sea lions at Sea lion Rock. As soon as we left the protection of Clark island we could feel the swell of the Pacific ocean. After a quick stop at Clark we made the crossing to Wouwen island. On our way to Clark we had to make a detour as one of the passages between 2 islands was not yet passable. As the day before the wind was supposed to pick up in the afternoon so we woke up early and were in our kayaks well before 9. Today was going to be a long day of paddling we had planned to go to Dicebox via Clark island and back via Turret island. After getting our first campfire of the trip going, a great veggie dinner, a beautiful sunset and a some campfire stories we went to bed. We were happy we made it to our camp in time, it was harsh out there even though the sun was still shining. About an hour after we arrived the wind picked up and white capped waves started to appear. We decided that this was going to be our basecamp for the coming 2 nights. I’m not gonna say where of course but it was beautiful, way more quiet and had amazing views. Right after we had set up our camp Amy found another, better, spot on the island to camp. We took a detour via Hand island and after about 2.5hrs of easy and quiet paddling we found the campground. Knowing that Dodd is known to be busy we opted for the last one. We started paddling at noon and our goal for today was either Dodd or Willis island to set up camp.

After a whale sighting and 3 hours on the ferry we arrived at the lodge eager to start paddling! We loaded the kayaks and soon realized we could have brought a lot more stuff, like more beer and, well more beer. Our journey started misty but luckily it cleared up when we came closer to the Pacific ocean. Arriving at the docks we discovered we weren’t the only paddlers, there were 2 other groups ready for an adventure. The next day we needed to be at the docks at 7.00am to get ready for another ferry with Lady Rose marine services that would drop us off at the Sechart lodge at the Broken group islands.Īlarm clocks went off at 6.00am and a little tired and confused we packed up. We took the 3.10pm ferry from Horseshoe bay to Nanaimo, did some shopping and drove to Port Alberni where we would camp out for the night. I strapped Betty once more on the roof of my car thinking about the fact that this was going to be her last trip before selling her. Of course I said yes and after a month long break from kayaking after the Yukon River Quest I felt ready to get back into my little yellow boat. A while back my friend Amy asked me if I wanted to join her on a kayak trip to the Broken group islands on the west coast of Vancouver island.
